With the increased use of technology, most people have use phones, laptops, and electronic devices in their daily lives. They tend to spend a lot of time on these devices, regardless of whether they are eating, driving, reading, or walking home. Most of them do not know the impact of spending a lot of their time staring at their screens. It is almost impossible to get rid of the blue light because it is virtually everywhere. There are natural and artificial sources of blue light. Some of the sources of artificial blue light include digital screens such as computers, cell phones, LED lighting, and fluorescent bulbs. Whereas blue light from natural sources is said to boost one’s mood, alertness and improve the feelings of wellbeing, exposure to too much of the blue light is harmful to one’s health. Eye Strain.

The use of electronic devices during most of our waking hours has contributed to a condition known as digital eyestrain. The condition not only affects adults but also affects children who spend most of their time playing video games and watching cartoons. The human eye is not very effective at blocking the blue light from reaching the light-sensitive retina, as it is, in blocking the UV rays. Research shows that blue light is so close to the ultraviolet radiation in wavelength, making it harmful to people’s vision. Some of the symptoms you may experience from excess exposure to blue light include blurry vision, irritated and dry eyes, neck and back pain as well as difficulty in focusing. If you are trying to limit the amount of blue light emitted from your computer, you should consider using computer glasses with yellow-tinted lenses.

Macular Degeneration.

Evidence shows that too much exposure to the blue light could cause permanent eye damage. This is because the excess blue light which penetrates the eye destroys the cells at the center of the retina, causing age-related macular degeneration. Usually, the melanin in our bodies serves the purpose of absorbing the harmful UV rays and blue light rays so that we are protected from the potential health risks. However, as you age, you lose the melanin, and this increases the chances of you getting eye problems. If you have a low macular pigment, it may mean that you are at risk of getting age-related macular degeneration, since more blue light penetrates and reaches your retina.

Lack Of Sleep.

Blue night suppresses the release of melatonin in the body, which is responsible for regulating sleep and circadian rhythm. This results in low quality sleep and may cause you to feel moody, anxious, and depressed. Besides, the circadian rhythm disruption may increase the chances of you getting heart diseases. If possible, you are advised to put your electronic devices aside, one hour before you sleep, to ensure you have a night of quality sleep.

Blue light technology is not entirely bad. The problem comes when you expose yourself to too much blue light, by using electronic devices and LED lighting frequently. To cut back on the blue light, you are advised to use screen filters on your phones, which help to eliminate the blue light. You could also use more yellow-tinted lightbulb as opposed to the bright white bulbs.
